Last night was my nine-year-old's first practice ice. I admit, with some chagrin, that it was something of a disappointment.
While I did get to meet a great coach who appeared on national television wearing the craziest Buffalo Bill fringed jacket I have ever seen, I found the Momzilla scene to be frightfully understated.
Okay. I will admit that I sat behind the Momzilla of a kid who is clearly trying to channel Johnny Weir in a fairly desperate way, and Momzilla clapped for everything he did. However, given the example of my grandmother, I really cannot fault her for the clapping. (See "Momzilla Copes With Competition")
Taking a bigger picture look, I must console myself with the observation that it was only pre-preliminary practice ice, and competition has not yet begun. And looking around further, I did actually see a bigger picture...including Ann Patrice McDonough in the infamous "butterfly dress" that, as we know from listening to Dick Button over and over, was made by her world-class Momzilla.
So with the inspiration of Momzilla McDonough in delightfully clear sight, I look forward to the beginning of competition
